Patient Receives New Lung After Only Two Days On Transplant List

In 2002, 61 year-old widow Susan Proctor was diagnosed with COPD.
Within the last 2 years she had pretty much been confined to her residence because her breathing had gotten so bad. She was on oxygen 24/7 and sometimes it didn't seem like enough.
Last September 2010 we had to have her rushed by ambulance to the hospital because she couldn't get a breath. At that time she quit smoking and spent a week in the hospital getting better. While she was there they talked to her about a lung transplant. After being smoke free for 6 months and a week worth of thorough testing at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, TX she was approved on to be placed on the transplant list on Tuesday August 2nd, 2011.
Friday August 5th, 2011 we were told she would be 2nd on the list, 1st if blood, etc matched.
On Sunday August 7th, 2011, after only 2 days we received the call that they had a set of lungs. After 2 1/2 hr drive and 19 tubes of blood she was taken to surgery.
After almost 4 hrs we were told that she was done, had a new set of lungs and everything went wonderful. She has a long road ahead of her and medication to take for the rest of her life, but her family truly believes they were blessed. This fundraiser is so important. She has always gone out of her way to help others and has been there for her kids no matter what the obstacle. She has struggled trying to be the same involved daughter, mother and grandparent since 06’ when her late husband of almost 38 years passed away suddenly from cancer.
According to Buddy Proctor, “He believes this is the right thing to do to help such an amazing  woman. I don’t believe any amount is too small. Since the fundraiser started on August 5th, 2011 they have only raised a little over $400.  Donations can be made at www.giveforward.org/susanrachelsproctor.
